98 Girls Finish Second Place in the Ontario Indoor Cup

Our 1998 girls, who were playing a year up in the U18 division of the 2015 Ontario Indoor Cup, put on a terrific performance, finishing as tournament finalists after narrowly coming out on the wrong end of a penalty shootout in the final.

Our Raiders, who are coached by Pino Decina and Joe Morra, were drawn into a preliminary round group which featured Mississauga Falcons, Vaughan Azzurri Vixens, and North Mississauga Panthers. After ending the round with 2 wins and 1 tie, while scoring 7 goals and conceding only twice, our Raiders finished as group winners and advanced to the final round.

In the final round the girls were placed in Group B alongside Thunder Bay Lakehead Express, Vaughan Azzurri Vixens, and Pickering Power Green. They would finish this round with the same record as the group stage, 2 wins and 1 loss, while also conceding only 2 goals and emerging from the round as winners of Group B. This impressive performance in the final round booked the girls a spot in the semi-finals, where they were matched up against Scarborough Wexford Magic. After a thrilling, high scoring game, our girls would come out on top by a score of 5-3 and secured a spot in the tournament finals.

The U18 Girls Ontario Indoor Cup final took place on Sunday, February 8 at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan, and would see our Raiders face-off against Pickering Power Green. The two teams met previously in the tournament in a game which ended in a 2-2 tie. The final game would prove once more how even these two teams are, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw, meaning the championship would be decided on penalty kicks. In the penalty shootout, our girls would narrowly fall short, coming out on the losing end of a tight 2-0 score.

A big congratulations goes out to our 1998 girls, including all players and coaches, for this impressive achievement in the 2015 Ontario Indoor Cup. Our Raiders put on a truly impressive display throughout the entire tournament, especially considering the fact they were competing against teams a year older.
