2000 Girls Green 2015 McGarrigle Cup Champions

August 17, 2015

The saying “the third times a charm” proved to be true for our 2000 Girls Green over the weekend. After finishing as tournament finalists twice earlier this season, our girls were able to secure a championship by winning the McGarrigle Cup.

It was fitting that the final game of the McGarrigle Cup saw our Raiders up against East Gwillimbury; the same team that defeated our girls in penalties at the Ambassador Cup final in Kingston last month. East Gwillimbury went ahead 1-0 within in the first 5 minutes, taking advantage of a quickly taken free kick. Our girls, however, would not be phased by this early deficit and came right back, showing great determination and mounting a number of attacks before finding the equalizer before the halftime whistle.

The second half saw our Raiders continuing with their combination play and mounting their attacks, and they would eventually take the lead by converting a well-earned penalty kick. They would add to their lead soon after with a beautifully struck free kick that sailed over the keepers head and nestled into the corner of the net. The girls seemed to grow in confidence after these two second half goals and comfortably carried the play the rest of the way, scoring two more times and securing a 5-1 victory.

Congratulations to our 2000 Girls Green on their result in the McGarrigle Cup and on their excellent performances throughout the season!
