Two Former RHSC Referees Named on the National List of Officials

If you look through the names listed on the Canadian Soccer Association’s National List of Officials, you will find the names of two former RHSC referees, Gianni Facchini and Peter Pendli. Both Gianni and Peter started as referees with Richmond Hill Soccer Club, learning about the game and receiving guidance through our Club’s various referee training courses. Through hard work and dedication they worked their way up the ranks, first officiating games in York Region and eventually moving on to referee games across Ontario and Canada.

Being named to the National List of Officials is a tremendous accomplishment, as it permits referees to officiate matches across North America, including professional games at the North American Soccer League (NASL) level. The next step after being named to this prestigious list is becoming a fully licensed FIFA Assistant or Head Referee, which is the highest possible certification a referee can obtain.

Both Gianni and Peter have demonstrated tremendous perseverance and work ethic throughout their referee careers, and showed an incredible amount of passion from the first moment they were handed a flag and whistle.

Gianni Facchini started refereeing small-sided soccer games for Richmond Hill Soccer Club at the young age of 13. He showed great promise from the very beginning, and ultimately progressed through the various certification levels of District, Regional, and Provincial over a period spanning more than 20 years. In 2012, Gianni was officially named to the National List of Match Officials, before being promoted to the Professional Referees Organization (PRO) this year which has enabled him to officiate MLS games. Being a referee at such an elite level has taken Gianni across the country and allowed him to be involved in numerous high profile games including Ontario Cup finals, Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) finals, Canada Games finals, and Canadian Championships finals. He has also officiated international friendlies involving teams such as Real Madrid, AS Roma, and Tottenham Hotspurs. Most recently, Gianni was appointed as an Assistant Referee for the NASL Championship Soccer Bowl at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas.

Peter Pendli’s referee career began on the fields of Richmond Green, where Head Referee Rick Singh would recruit many of our Club’s players. After officiating countless games within Richmond Hill Soccer Club and gaining praise at both the District and Regional levels, Peter decided he was ready to take control of games outside of York Region and become a Provincial referee. Officiating games at the Provincial level took Peter across the province, from Ottawa to Windsor to Thunder Bay, and provided him invaluable experience that he carries with him today. He was officially named to the National List of Match Officials in 2013. Throughout his many years as a referee, Peter has officiated several prestigious games, including the U18 National Championships, Men’s Ontario Cup final, and an international friendly between AC Milan and Olympiacos – a game Peter notes as the highlight of his career.

Having completed my first year on the national list, I cannot help but to reflect on all those who believed and supported me in my pursuit of happiness. My reflections often come back to my roots and beginnings that occurred on various fields in Richmond Hill. Without a strong support group my dreams would not be met.” - Peter Pendli

Richmond Hill Soccer Club would like to congratulate Peter and Gianni on their outstanding accomplishments and the dedication they have shown throughout their many years as referees. They are true role models for young referees everywhere!
