Become a Referee

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the RHSC Referee Program. Referees in Ontario are independent contractors, who are trained and certified by Ontario Soccer. Referees (new or returning) apply to the RHSC Head Referee every season to be offered matches to officiate through the year. Referees are compensated based on the age and level of play of the game. If you are interested in learning about our Game Fees, please review the Referee Fee Schedule here.

To become a referee in Ontario, you must take the Entry-level or Small-Sided Game Match Official courses offered by Ontario Soccer. The course has both an online theory portion, and an on-field practical portion. Both online and on-field portions of your chosen course must be completed before your are eligible to Referee for RHSC, or any Club in Ontario. If you wish to referee with Richmond Hill, please fill out this form and also ensure that you are registered for Match Official Course. Hopeful referees must be at least 14 years old as of March 31st of the current year to attend the training program. Referees who accept games with RHSC will receive additional guidance and mentorship from the Club Head Referee.

If you have any questions about the Referee Application, please contact RHSC aheadreferee@richmondhillsoccer.com.

Ontario Soccer - Match Official Courses / Registration

You must complete the Ontario Soccer Match Official (Referee) Course if you wish to officiate for the RHSC. There are two courses to select from: Entry-Level and Small-Sided.

Entry-Level - The Entry-Level course is the most popular. It will allow you to referee games for 9x9 and 11x11 . It will allow you to be both a Centre Referee and an Assistant Referee (Lines). The only requirement needed to register for the Entry-Level course is that you must be 14 years of age before March 31st of the current year.

Small-Sided - The Small-Sided course is another option available for those who do not meet the requirements for the Entry-Level course. It will allow you to referee games for 7x7 (U8-U10). You can only be a Centre Referee (as the younger ages do not have Assistant Referees). The only requirement to register for the Small-Sided course is that you must be 12 years of age before March 31st of the current year.

Registration for Courses

Ontario Soccer has changed the framework for both Entry Level and Small Sided Referee Courses. Everything is now done via online webinar and self-study for the theory concepts behind the entrance examination. There will still also be a practical session hosted by either the club or the district throughout the first season. Please ensure that you register ASAP online and that you list Richmond Hill Soccer Club as your HOME Club.
